Madison County Election Commission wins approval for secure ballot mailers and tablet cases

Election Commission staff said existing green ballot mailers had deteriorated and were sometimes torn, exposing ballots when mailed. They also showed a new rigid carrying case that can store the county's electronic poll books and related printer equipment more safely and reduce wear from loading and unloading precinct workers.
The board approved the transfer by voice vote. Election Commission representatives said they maintain Venmo and Cash App donation links for team support and will proceed with procurement once funds are shifted.

- Transfer of available budgeted funds from a 500-series line item to a 600-series line item to buy approximately 100 secure ballot mailer bags and protective tablet cases (final purchase quantity and vendor to be determined by staff).
Why it matters
County election officials said the secured mailers and cases reduce risk of ballot exposure during transit and cut wear-and-tear on poll books that currently require oversized, awkward carrying arrangements. Election staff noted some precinct workers previously transported large poll-book boxes insecurely in vehicles due to their size and weight.
