At a recent United Community Action Partnership (UCAP) meeting, according to remarks the board heard, UCAP representative Debbie Branch shared last year’s energy-assistance expenditures and household counts for Meeker County: approximately $311,000 for primary heat assistance covering 724 households; about $71,000 for crisis assistance covering 162 households; and roughly $29,000 for emergency heating repairs covering 21 households. The presenter told commissioners she was not asking the county for money but wanted to alert local officials to possible increased demand on county social services if federal assistance were cut.
Board members clarified the status of the change: one commissioner noted the proposal to eliminate the assistance appears in a House-passed bill but is not yet law and that details remain uncertain. “It’s in the bill that the House approved,” a commissioner said during the meeting; another said programs and eligibility could change and cautioned against overgeneralizing from national media coverage.
The board did not take formal action on the briefing. Commissioners said they wanted the data to understand the scale of need and to anticipate what HHS and local service providers might face if federal assistance is reduced.
