The San Clemente Planning Commission on May 21 unanimously recommended that City Council approve new red curb markings at the driveway for the Seville senior living facility at 2421 Calle Frontera to improve vehicle access and sight lines.
Zach Ponson, assistant city engineer, said the newly opened senior facility has generated comments from residents and staff about difficulty exiting the driveway because there is no buffer or bike lane on that segment of Calle Frontera. Ponson recommended adding 40 feet of red curb to the left of the driveway approach and 20 feet to the right to provide clearer sight lines and vehicle access.
"The new senior facility called the Seville On Calle Frontera ... is now open. And we did receive, quite a few actual comments, but it's very hard to get out of their drive approach," Ponson said. Commissioners had no public speakers on the item and moved to forward staff’s recommendation to City Council. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Crandall and passed unanimously.
The commission asked staff whether the proposed length would be sufficient for senior residents’ needs; Ponson said the recommended dimensions were appropriate given the roadway curvature and the need to balance curb restrictions against parking availability. The matter will go to City Council for final action.
