District staff estimated the fiscal implications for Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) at about $300,000 if additional teams advance to state and national levels; staff also reported prior travel budgets of approximately $171,000 for chess and $157,000 for global winners in past years.
Dr. Chavez said the district had planned conservatively during a recent budget cycle when it forecast a larger shortfall; improved conditions relative to that worst-case scenario allowed trustees to consider additional student travel expenses for competitive events. District officials noted many CTE organizations have their own advancement rules (for example, some advance only first through third), so the number of students who will require travel funding depends on competition results and registration deadlines.
Trustee Daniella Valdez Lopez introduced the item; trustees discussed timing and logistics, including registration deadlines and hotel availability. District staff said where registration deadlines are imminent they would work with the superintendent and administration to move forward and indicated the district could call a special meeting if necessary to finalize funding for competitions with immediate deadlines.
