Facilities committee recommends short-term classroom additions, outlines long-range bond priorities

During a facilities-planning update, district staff and architects summarized a demography study and committee reactions to draft long-range planning criteria.

Staff said K–12 enrollment is projected to be flat to grow by as many as 200 students over the next 10 years. The study also noted a dip in birth rates in 2020 that could reduce kindergarten enrollment for an upcoming school year; the district is monitoring current registrations as a real-world test of the projection.

Because elementary capacity is approaching limits, the facilities committee recommended adding classrooms to existing elementary schools in the short term rather than immediately committing to a fifth elementary campus. Committee members said classroom additions could be an opportunity to add specialized program space for high-need special-education classes that currently share rooms with general instruction.

Architects showed a draft feeder diagram and long-range criteria; the architects will return with refined materials to present at an April board workshop or meeting. The committee also listed potential priorities for a bond issue that could be placed as early as April 2026. Priorities under consideration included elementary classrooms and early-childhood spaces, program and common spaces, middle-school outdoor athletic facilities (turf field, track and parking) and three major items on the high school long-range plan. Board members noted a future bond will not cover every listed need and that the district will refine priorities between now and a final decision.

No bond decision was made at the meeting; the committee report was informational and will return to the board with updated designs and cost analyses.
