System legislative team begins session work; guidance for student outreach to follow

Tam told Student Advisory Committee members on Jan. 10 that the system legislative team had begun work at the state Capitol and will provide materials to help students engage with state lawmakers during the legislative session.
"The session opened on Monday of this week, so they've already been at the Capitol running around," Tam said, and staff will produce guidelines for students that explain how to contact legislators, provide sample letters and identify opportunities such as legislative breakfasts where students can participate.
The system legislative staff plan to distribute the guidance toward the end of January and will seek student voices to join campus-level events. Tam described the legislative team as working throughout the session (typically through May or early June) and said they would be in regular contact with SAC to identify areas where student testimony or presence would be useful.
Next steps: system office staff will prepare outreach packets and sample materials for student governments, identify relevant legislators for each campus, and coordinate opportunities for students to participate in legislative events.
The update emphasized system office support rather than directing students on policy: materials will be distributed so students can decide how to participate in legislative advocacy.
