Local volunteer urges stronger sustainability lens in district strategic plan

During the public comment period on March 13, Carrie Buie, introduced as a Milwaukie resident and parent, urged the North Clackamas School District Board of Directors to add a district‑wide sustainability lens to planning and curriculum.
Buie said she volunteers with the North Clackamas Eco School Network, which runs recycling campaigns, clothing swaps and Earth Day events across the district. She noted existing district steps—durable utensils in lunchrooms, back‑of‑house composting, share tables, integrated pest management and strategic energy management—but said sustainability is not yet visible as an explicit district value.
"Our core values—equity, relationships, integrity, empowerment, care—are great, but we are missing one: sustainability," Buie told the board. She asked the board to increase visibility of sustainability and to invite community volunteers to participate in planning and implementation.
The board thanked Buie and noted the district strategic plan language encouraging environmental education; no board action was requested during the comment.
Buie's remarks were read after the board chair explained public comment procedures and time limits, including policy KBA‑AR requirements for requests for information and accommodations.
