County sets public hearing for proposed 20‑bed shelter behind Monticello jail

County social services staff told the Health and Human Services committee they plan to set a public hearing for April 24 on a proposed lease and development of property on Pitaluga Road in the town of Thompson to build a 20‑bed, coed shelter.
Staff said architectural designs have already been drawn and that the parcel is located behind the Sullivan County jail and close to the village of Monticello. The proposed facility is intended to provide single-person shelter and related housing services and to reduce placements in hotel rooms.
"This is a project we've been working on for several years now, to bring a shelter, and housing gateway to Sullivan County," a staff member told the committee, noting the county expects operational savings compared with current hotel placements.
The staff member said consultations with the county attorney and the county’s procurement office are underway to structure the lease and any operating agreement. Pending legislative authorization and required public hearing procedures, the county plans to present the proposal at a public hearing on April 24.
Committee members responded positively and asked staff to provide further operational and budget details at a later meeting. No final lease or contract was approved at this session.
