The City of North Lauderdale Commission on March 13 accepted a resignation and appointed four residents to the Charter Review Committee, the panel that will review proposed amendments to the city charter later this year.
The action followed a discussion of eligibility under Charter Section 9.9, which says the charter review commission must be composed of five electors who hold no other city office, although members of purely advisory boards are eligible. Commissioners raised concerns when one applicant, Marlo Till Agold, was identified as a current member of the city's Code Enforcement Board, which exercises quasi-judicial authority.
City Attorney and commissioners reviewed Section 9.9 aloud in the meeting. After the legal interpretation that Code Enforcement members are not "purely advisory," Till Agold offered to resign her Code Enforcement appointment so she could serve on the Charter Review Committee. Till Agold told commissioners she would "resign effective immediately." The commission accepted that resignation and then approved her appointment to the Charter Review Committee.
The commission also approved three other charter-review appointments on the consent agenda: Kimada Johnson (residing at 7715 Kimberly Boulevard), Alba Boatta (8207 South Coral Circle) and Carol Cheney (6480 Southwest Eighth Street). Roll-call votes were recorded approving the appointments with unanimous yes votes from Commissioner Lewis, Commissioner Regina Martin, Commissioner Bustamante, Vice Mayor Louis Ricketts and Mayor Samson Bordelon.
Commissioners said they wanted to be consistent and transparent in following the charter text when making appointments. Staff confirmed the commission would receive resignation letters in writing and the clerk would record the effective dates.
The commission did not create or change charter text at the meeting; it only appointed members to the panel that will evaluate the charter.
The clerk will publish the Charter Review Committee roster and any further scheduling for the commission's review of proposed charter amendments ahead of the committee's convening in 2025.
