DeKalb Township approves Road District budget amendment to fund new equipment storage and site work

The DeKalb Township Board of Trustees closed a public hearing and approved an amendment to the Road District budget appropriation ordinance to move remaining line-item balances into a capital fund to help pay for a new equipment storage building and associated site work.
Supervisor House opened the hearing to discuss budgetary adjustments to the Road and Bridge and Building & Equipment funds. “The amended portion of the budget is just to clear up balances from line items in both the road and bridge and the building and equipment fund, and then to shift that money into a capital fund,” House said. He told trustees the transfers will help pay for construction of a new building and site work planned to start in the spring.
The board discussed specific line items and how unspent balances—such as dollars budgeted for trucks that cost less than estimated—were pooled for capital use. House said the township carries a recurring $2,500 line item for mutual-aid expenses related to Illinois Public Works Association (IPW) deployments. He also reported that by shifting year-end balances and more accurate levy receipts the township was able to increase the Building & Equipment fund from about $150,000 in the original budget to roughly $299,000 in the amended budget.
After public comment period closed and the hearing ended, trustees moved to approve the amending ordinance (identified in meeting materials as an amending appropriation ordinance for the Road District). The roll call on the ordinance showed four ayes and zero nays; the motion passed.
This amendment reduces the number of small end-of-year balances carried forward, House said, and should reduce borrowing needs while consolidating funding for the new building project. The board did not set a construction contract or timeline beyond noting site work is expected to begin in spring.
The board also opened and closed the hearing formally before taking the vote; no members of the public spoke in opposition during the hearing.
Looking ahead, the township will use the capital fund balance and additional Road and Bridge resources to assemble the roughly $300,000–$400,000 House estimated would be available toward the building project over the next 10–12 months.
