Huron superintendent outlines three‑year action research plan to investigate factors behind graduation rates

Superintendent Dr. Eric Steinhoff told the Huron Board of Education on Jan. 27 that the district will conduct three years of action research to identify factors that inhibit graduation and to develop plans to address those factors.
Steinhoff said the district’s action research cycle will begin this spring and summer with a review of peer‑reviewed journal articles and a literature scan. The fall will focus on analyzing local student achievement data and gathering input from families, students and staff through surveys. Analysis of collected data is planned for spring 2026, and the district anticipates incorporating findings into the strategic‑plan renewal scheduled for summer 2026.
The superintendent said the district will track multiple data points to measure progress, including graduation rates, English Learner/ESL metrics and "port of a graduate" documentation. He described the work as likely requiring sustained effort over a decade to produce lasting results and said the goal aligns with the district’s strategic goal of improving student achievement.
Steinhoff also reported that district leaders and community partners had testified before the state Senate Education Committee about partnerships that support educational opportunities. He said the district is reviewing two mentoring programs with the intent of recommending one for high‑school students to improve achievement.
No formal board action was required; Steinhoff offered to answer questions.
