Board recognizes student-athlete and ROTC cadets; Flight Academy selection highlighted
Summary
Sullivan County school board honored a Westridge student who reached the state wrestling tournament after a late start in the sport, presented a certificate of appreciation to a West Ridge Air Force JROTC unit for raising a flag at the county veterans park, and noted a cadet selected for the Air Force Flight Academy scholarship.
The Sullivan County Board of Education used the meeting’s recognition segment to honor student and cadet accomplishments.
Chairman Price asked Coach Ratliff to introduce wrestler Jimmy Johnston, a Westridge sophomore who, despite starting wrestling only last year, reached the state tournament and defeated higher-ranked opponents. Coach Ratliff highlighted Johnston’s rapid improvement and called the state advancement a major accomplishment for a sophomore.
The board also presented a certificate of appreciation to West Ridge Air Force JROTC for assisting with flag raisings at the Sullivan County Veterans Memorial Park. Sergeant Aubrey and others from the JROTC were recognized after staff described the program’s role in raising the flags during a veterans memorial event.
Separately, staff highlighted that a cadet, William Hawkins (as named in the meeting), was selected to attend an Air Force Junior ROTC Flight Academy summer program that includes a scholarship covering transportation, food, lodging, and flight training; staff said the program is highly selective and that the cadet would receive private pilot training and college credit upon completion.
The board and community members thanked the cadets, Coach Ratliff and the student for their accomplishments and service.
