Board hears facilities updates; schedules site visit to Bluff City over safety entrance concerns

District staff updated the Sullivan County Board of Education on several facilities and safety items and recommended an on-site visit to review a proposed entrance redesign at Bluff City Elementary.

Staff said the district has received communication from Garland, the roofing contractor, and if the district’s consultant signs off on recently submitted materials, Garland could begin work on the East High School roof around April 1. The report noted the consultant is working through Chris McCarthy’s office and that scheduling depends on consultant approval.

Separately, staff raised safety concerns at Bluff City Elementary and requested that the board hold its next regular meeting at Bluff City to allow members to see the site and the proposed entrance solution in person. Staff said the proposed change would move student drop-off and bus staging to reduce the number of students who step directly into a city street; the board was asked to tour the location as part of the next meeting.

Staff also said a vendor that sells and installs Flock camera systems offered to come back for a fuller presentation. The superintendent requested authorization to schedule a board retreat in the spring (six days suggested) where the cameras and other safety items could be presented and discussed prior to resuming a regular agenda.

The board did not take a final vote on new construction work during the meeting excerpted; directions recorded were to schedule the Bluff City site visit and bring the camera vendor to the retreat for further discussion.

The updates were presented at the end of the meeting after a facility tour at East High School, which board members and staff said offered helpful context for the recommendations.
