Gilpin County commissioners authorize $275,000 Justice Assistance Grant application for sheriff technology upgrades

The Gilpin County Board of County Commissioners voted to authorize submission of a grant application to the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice for the 2025 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG), not to exceed $275,000, to fund technology and safety equipment for the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office.

County presenters said the request covers a comprehensive technology upgrade that includes replacement or enhancement of mobile data terminals, issuance of new Tasers with warranties and training, purchase of a handheld drug recognition scanner, and a ductless fume hood for evidence processing. Officials said the line-item total based on older quotes is just under $261,000 and that the application includes a cushion up to $275,000 while staff waits for updated pricing.

Finance and public-safety presenters also said the county does not need to provide a local match for this grant. Staff clarified that the drug “next kits” used to confirm field readings are already budgeted on an annual basis and are not part of the JAG request.

No public opposition or extended debate was recorded. A commissioner moved to adopt Resolution 25-029, authorizing submittal of the JAG application, and a second followed. The motion was approved by voice vote with all commissioners present voting in favor; the board recorded the action as approved.

County staff said numbers in the draft application will be refined before final submission and that the draft had not yet been circulated to all board members at the time of the vote. The board did not take further amendments or place conditions on the application during the meeting.

Staff indicated they would finalize quotes and submit the application per the terms authorized by the resolution.
