Parks staff report summer hiring plans, Malley closure and Bates Logan progress

Deputy Director Brad Anderson and Parks staff reported on seasonal hiring, recent facility maintenance and several park projects.
On hiring, staff said seasonal recruitment starts months before the season; Pirate's Cove alone hires about 200 seasonal employees each year. Anderson said applications typically lag while school is in session and then surge in April and May. Staff said Parks and Recreation posts positions on the city website and attends local job fairs, including the upcoming Maui Center job fair and an Inglewood High School fair.
Anderson described the annual Malley Center closure that allows deep cleaning, floor refurbishments and counter redesigns. Staff removed a COVID-era protective partition at the Malley front desk during the closure to improve staff-visitor communication and said IT and facilities crews were instrumental in the week-long project.
Adrian Torres updated the commission on Bates Logan Park, saying the basketball court concrete was poured and that the bicycle portion of the project (by an anticipated contractor, American Ramp Company) is scheduled to begin in April with an expected completion in May. Staff said the grand opening is planned for early summer and that pavilion reservations will be unavailable until construction allows staff to guarantee rental dates.
Staff also reported that the Southwest Greenbelt Trail asphalt is being replaced with concrete in phased sections and that the first pour occurred the week of the meeting. Commissioners asked staff to update the commission and the public when pavilion rental schedules are available and raised questions about inclusivity in summer programming; staff said they will continue inclusivity training and invited community members to work with recreation supervisors on program ideas for participants with additional needs.
No formal actions were taken on these operational items; staff will continue recruitment and post updates on the city website and the pavilion rental page as construction timelines allow.
