Committee approves first readings for digital-use, AI and cybersecurity policies

The Coventry School Committee voted 7-0 on first readings of three technology-related policies: (1) Digital Technology Acceptable Use and Internet Safety (policy GBEE), (2) Artificial Intelligence (policy JICJA) and (3) Cybersecurity (policy EHAC).
Technology director Jim (surname not recorded) and committee leadership presented the three documents together and explained the intent behind each. The acceptable-use update was described as a cleanup and consolidation of language that dates to the district's initial Chromebook rollout. The artificial intelligence policy focuses on permissible and ethical uses of generative AI in instruction and assessment and includes references to student-handbook and discipline code guardrails; committee members said AI should be revisited frequently as the technology evolves. The cybersecurity policy was presented in part to meet insurance-carrier requirements: it directs the technology department to create and maintain required documents and procedures for cybersecurity coverage.
Members discussed revisiting AI policy annually, enforcing guardrails in the student code for disallowed generative-AI use (for example, producing graded work), and the importance of the cybersecurity documents to secure insurance coverage. All three items passed on first reading, with the committee chair calling the vote and each motion carrying 7-0.
