Sodexo outlines local-food initiatives, participation gains and student programs for Coventry schools
Summary
Sodexo, the district food-service manager, told the Coventry School Committee it increased local purchasing, expanded student programs including a Future Chef competition and recorded year-to-date increases in meal participation; committee members asked about waste, equipment grants and feasibility of more local scratch cooking.
Sodexo representatives presented the company's work running Coventry Public Schools' food service, saying the vendor increased local purchasing, expanded student engagement events and has seen higher student participation in meals this year.
The presentation, delivered by Alana Konka (general manager) and Ashley Plant (district manager, Sodexo), outlined four "pillars of student well-being": nourishment, achievement, community and partnerships. Sodexo reported purchasing more than 20,000 pounds of local food in the last year for Coventry and noted that the company-wide local purchasing totaled over $400,000. The vendor also runs a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) delivering produce twice weekly to Black Rock, Tioga and Hopkins Hill elementary schools.
