County mayor urges residents to check measles immunizations after cases emerge

Salt Lake County’s mayor reported March 11 that the county health department is prioritizing a measles-response effort after recent, highly transmissible cases were identified.
The mayor told the County Council the health department is “working aggressively on the measles effort” and encouraged residents to make sure immunizations are current, noting that some older adults may fall into a vaccination effectiveness gap.
“I’m actually one of the people who was in the gap. The year I was born, the vaccine wasn't as effective. So, I'm told I need to go in for another booster,” the mayor said, urging residents in similar age cohorts to check immunization records. The mayor said the disease’s high transmissibility and potential for severe health impacts make the effort a county priority.
The mayor thanked the health department staff for leaning in early on the response and said the department is focusing on immunizations and preparedness, alongside ongoing communication with local health partners.
No specific new policy or emergency order was announced at the meeting. The mayor also used remarks to highlight upcoming county activities — from rec-center passes and youth programs to the Mid Valley Performing Arts Center Westside Culture Fest in August 2025 — and to celebrate recent naturalization and citizenship ceremonies organized by the county’s New Americans office.
County residents seeking information on measles vaccination were directed to the Salt Lake County Health Department and its public information resources for clinic locations and eligibility guidance.
