Recreation staff open summer programming registration and outline scholarship, senior-trip plans

Trevor Helton, a recreation staff member, told the Parks and Recreation Board on March 13 that registration for 2025 summer camps and classes is open and that last year's total participation across camps and programs was 1,631.
Helton said staff will advertise via postcards, an advertising banner at Boyer Park and social media; programming will use established facilities such as Ray's Mill, St. Paul's at Piscoll, the Community Room and Frontier Park. The first full week of summer programming will begin the week after Memorial Day.
Helton also summarized an upcoming seniors bus trip to Jefferson, Texas, scheduled for March 26. He said the trip cost is $190 per person and 13 people had signed up at the time of the meeting; he added there is a 20-person minimum and that the department will absorb any shortfall if attendance falls below that minimum.
On financial assistance, Helton and staff said the department has operated a recreation scholarship program since 2019 funded primarily by net revenues from the Kids' Christmas Shop and by voluntary $5–$10 donations at program registration. Cecily Fannin, identified in the meeting as the recreation coordinator, has proposed a "Heroes and Helpers" recognition initiative that would offer a 10 percent discount to eligible people (active military, veterans, first responders and Prosper ISD employees or Prosper residents) to expand awareness of the scholarship program.
Helton said the scholarship program is available to Prosper ISD students and Prosper residents; town staff said outreach has included social media, the parks-and-recreation website and cooperating with the school district and local nonprofits to reach families in need. Staff invited board assistance with targeted outreach to senior housing (Ladera) and other groups to increase participation.
No formal policy change or budget allocation was made during the meeting; staff said they are working on marketing and outreach for enrollment and scholarship distribution.
