State Library seeks funding to replace aging hardware and adopt cloud security services

Devin Mitchell of the Department of Finance summarized a request for approximately $332,000 in 2025‑26 and $282,000 ongoing to replace outdated hardware and purchase renewable cloud‑based security subscription services. The funds would be used to modernize the State Library's cybersecurity posture and to maintain access to its digital and historical resources.
Ian Klein from the Legislative Analyst's Office told the committee the LAO had no major concerns and recommended approving the proposal. Rebecca Wendt, deputy state librarian, said the upgrades align with state cybersecurity standards, help protect personally identifiable information and maintain public access to California’s historical records. Wendt said the work is fiscally responsible and necessary to “keep the bad guys out” and sustain library operations.
The subcommittee did not take a vote at the hearing; members generally accepted LAO’s recommendation to approve the funding request and asked only for follow‑up accounting details.
