The Washington Unified School District board voted March 13 to approve a service agreement with the Roberts Family Development Center to bring the Yolo County Office of Education's Freedom Schools summer program to Riverbank Elementary from June 10 to July 18, 2025.
June Flores, the district's Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, described the program as "a research based and multicultural program model" that offers academic enrichment, family engagement, civic education, intergenerational leadership development and nutrition and mental-health supports. She told the board the district will serve 80 Washington Unified students and the financial impact to the district is $233,727, paid from the Learning Recovery Block Grant.
Public commenters endorsed the program. Kamaya Turner, who coordinated the West Sacramento Freedom School site last summer, said the program develops young leaders and creates family and community bonds; Jacqueline Kendricks of the Roberts Family Development Center emphasized the program's role in helping children "see themselves in literature" and build social-emotional tools that transfer into the school year.
Board action
Trustee Hunt moved to approve the agreement; Trustee Wong seconded. The motion carried with an affirmative vote from the board.
Why it matters: Freedom Schools is a six-week literacy and enrichment initiative run by Yolo County that uses high-quality culturally relevant texts and a 10:1 student-to-adult staffing model; the program targets summer learning loss and family engagement for rising fourth- through sixth-graders.
