South Salt Lake — Promise South Salt Lake and Habitat for Humanity Greater Salt Lake announced a partnership at the March 12 City Council meeting to deliver critical home repairs to low- and moderate-income homeowners in South Salt Lake, using a SoFi grant and matching funds from Habitat.
Rebecca Young, housing navigator at Promise South Salt Lake, told the council that the city-distributed Utah Homeowners Assistance Fund outreach reached 324 homeowners before funds ran out and that additional funding was necessary to meet local need. The organizations secured funding from SoFi — a $30,000 award after applying for $20,000 — which, combined with a Habitat match, will allow five grants of $20,000 each for homeowners in need of critical repairs.
Corinne Crowe, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Greater Salt Lake Area, described Habitat’s critical home repair program, which performs a comprehensive inspection and may deliver grants up to $20,000 for health-and-safety and accessibility work. Habitat said it has completed more than 1,100 critical-repair projects over 14 years and already has five South Salt Lake projects in the pipeline.
Program eligibility requires homeowners to live in South Salt Lake, own their home (on a foundation), and be at or below 80% of area median income. Projects include roof repair, gutter replacement, window and plumbing work, and accessibility modifications intended to allow residents to age in place.
Promise and Habitat have mailed materials to South Salt Lake addresses and will hold outreach events; staff said they anticipate the SoFi-funded grants to be administered in partnership with Habitat and to benefit homeowners who need repairs but lack resources to complete them.
Ending: The partnership is intended to preserve existing homeownership and housing quality in South Salt Lake; staff will proceed with outreach and intake for the five matched grants.
