Planning staff to submit nomination for Pocatello as an American World War II Heritage City

Planning staff told the Pocatello City Council they will prepare and submit a nomination seeking designation of Pocatello as an American World War II Heritage City through the National Park Service.
Jim Anglesey, long‑range planner, said the program recognizes communities that made significant contributions to the World War II war effort and that the nomination should also document how the city honors that legacy today. Staff have started compiling historical documentation and reached out to local organizations including the Bannock County Veterans Service Office, the public library, the airport and community veterans groups. Anglesey said endorsement letters from members of Congress are required; staff reported outreach and at the time of the briefing had at least some congressional support (Representative Simpson and Senator Crapo) and expected to collect the necessary endorsements.
Angelesy also noted the program permits only one nomination per state, and staff had become aware another Idaho community planned to apply. The nomination packet will include a mayor‑signed cover letter, photographs and maps of sites of significance and documentation of present‑day commemorative activities such as local Pearl Harbor remembrance events. Planning staff said they will prepare the nomination and return with the formal packet and legal review for council consideration before final submission.
