The Sulphur City Council on March 10 granted an exception allowing residential occupancy at 102 Louisiana Avenue, which had been listed in a condemnation rule-to-show-cause for unsafe conditions. The council then moved to postpone the condemnation hearing and monitoring until September to permit the property owner to complete repairs.
City staff explained the property had converted from residential to commercial use about two years earlier and that the owner made structural repairs and mold mitigation with approximately $14,000 in remedial work and a contractor available to proceed. The owner, Dominic Valente, said contractors had begun work and that he planned further interior repairs once permits and contractor approvals were in place.
Council discussion noted the city had previously continued condemnation while the owner sought the exception and that staff recommended either dismissing the rule to show cause or continuing it for six months to monitor progress. The council voted to postpone the condemnation review until the September regular meeting and authorized staff to pull the item from the agenda earlier if inspections show repairs are complete.
The motion to postpone included direction for staff monitoring; the council recorded a roll-call vote with members present voting in favor.
