Senate proclaims March 19 as California Agriculture Day

The California State Senate on Thursday adopted Senate Resolution 28, declaring Wednesday, March 19, 2025, as California Agriculture Day and recognizing the scale of the state's agricultural economy and workforce.
Senator Hurtado, who introduced SR 28 as vice chair of the Senate Agricultural Committee, described California as the nation’s top agricultural producer and cited figures in the resolution and floor remarks: more than $50 billion in annual agricultural output statewide, a fifth of that in her district, and that California supplies over one‑third of the country’s vegetables and two‑thirds of its fruits and nuts. The resolution listed the year’s theme as “Ag: Cultivating Careers and Communities.”
Several senators spoke in support on the floor, including Senator Choi, Senator Grove and Senator Cortese, who emphasized the economic scale of farming, the importance of water to production, the role of farm workers and the need for farmland conservation and investment in agricultural training. Senator Laird noted recent state investments in the University of California cooperative extension and California State University agricultural campuses to support workforce and research capacity.
The resolution was eligible for unanimous roll call; the Senate recorded 36 ayes and no votes against and adopted SR 28.
SR 28 is an observance resolution and does not itself create regulatory requirements or funding; sponsors encouraged members, staff and the public to participate in Ag Day events on the West Steps on March 19.
