New playgrounds, repaved lots and sports complex contract move ahead in Santa Maria parks

Parks staff on March 11 updated the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Commission about several completed and ongoing projects: a veterans-themed playground and a donated bronze eagle at Veterans Memorial, repaving and ADA upgrades at the Menami parking lot, progress on the Inos House and Japanese Community Center, new pocket parks under construction, and a contracted sports complex project.
Staff credited Kiwanis for sponsoring the bronze eagle and said uplighting for the monument was added through a grant. The Menami parking-lot repaving, a project last resurfaced in 1979, included ADA ramps and striping; staff said it will improve access to the adjacent senior center.
The Inos House and Japanese Community Center remain in the punch-list stage but are moving toward landscaping and final finishes, and pocket-park work at DeJoy and Taylor Miller locations is underway. Staff said Battles Road beautification and City Hall landscaping projects are largely complete.
On the sports complex, staff said a contract with SCI Engineering has been signed and construction mobilization and fencing will begin shortly; a ground-breaking or golden-shovel event will be scheduled.
Staff also noted the community garden has 88 plots, with about one-third occupied by a local college under an agreement; a waiting list for plots currently exceeds 50 people.
