Commission approves Natchez Trace lodge reconstruction; new 49-room inn, pool and event space targeted for Dec. 20, 2027 substantial completion

The State Building Commission approved a scope revision and early design phase for a lodge reconstruction at Natchez Trace State Park that will replace the existing inn on Pin Oak Lake with a four-story facility containing 49 guest rooms, a restaurant and bar, and divisible event space.

Department of Environment and Conservation staff and Smith G Studio presented the project, saying the existing lodge closes seasonally and the new design aims to attract visitors year-round by reorienting guest-facing spaces toward lake views. The proposal calls for demolition of the existing facility and construction on the same site, a rotated building footprint to maximize view sheds, and a new pool replacing the pool behind the current lodge. Presenters said full-time staff would be reassigned during construction to avoid layoffs.

Design details presented included a two-story lobby/great room aligned with a primary view, a dining area with seating for about 75 and a bar for about 25, and a double-height event space that, when fully open, would accommodate about 200 attendees. All guest rooms were described as having private balconies or patios with lake views; the amenity terrace would include fire pits, a zero-entry pool and a lake overlook. The team said the new inn would total four stories with a mix of double-queen, king, and king-suite rooms; king and king-suite rooms would connect to double-queen rooms to facilitate group stays.

During questions, the commission recorded a projected substantial completion date of Dec. 20, 2027, and the commission approved the item by voice vote. The presentation indicated the existing facility had 47 rooms and the proposed inn would have 49 rooms.
