Parks commission hears fee-study recap; staff to prepare council report

The Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Commission on March 11 reviewed a recap of a recreation and parks fee study and heard that staff will prepare a council agenda report to carry recommended fee changes to the City Council.
Staff said the revenue-cost study examined department fees by category and compared results to the commission’s previously reviewed cost-recovery pyramid. Commissioners generally agreed to keep most youth fees low — about 1% cost recovery in the department’s analysis — while considering larger increases for activities that primarily benefit individual participants, such as sports personal-development programs.
A staff presenter said some programs previously recovered about 17% of costs and the proposed adjustments would move those programs toward roughly 20% to 25% cost recovery. Staff will circulate the council agenda report and supporting charts to the commission for review; commissioners were told their input could still be placed in the document, though formal adoption had already occurred among those who attended the special meeting where the study was debated.
There was no formal motion or vote on fee changes at the March 11 meeting; the item was presented as an update and a direction to send the recap to the City Council for consideration.
