The Academic Affairs Committee reviewed three draft academic calendars for 2025–26, 2026–27 and 2027–28 and agreed to move the drafts to the full-board meeting for approval.
Assistant Superintendent Damien Johnston summarized the committee’s priorities: begin school after or around Labor Day when feasible, finish the student year as early in June as possible (targeting the second Friday in June for 2025–26), keep a full week of spring break, provide traditional snow-day buffers, include flexible instructional days and limit half days because of childcare concerns. He said two proposed calendars had been seen by the committee previously and one was new.
For 2025–26 staff moved an in-service half day that originally fell in October to April so administrators and teachers could reconvene in mid-spring for reflection and preparation. District staff said the 2025–26 final student day is currently set for June 12, 2026, and teachers’ last contracted day would extend later as needed only if snow days are used.
For 2026–27 the district is proposing a slightly earlier start (before Labor Day) to preserve an earlier June end date; the draft keeps the Halloween half day that elementary families value. For 2027–28 the calendar places the first student day on September 1 and builds in in-service timing around the Labor Day weekend; staff noted the draft also takes account of primary-election timing that could move primary contests into April in a presidential-election year.
Committee members asked for clarity on Halloween scheduling and ESY dates; staff confirmed the Halloween afternoon half day is retained and that ESY dates appear on the draft calendar. Committee members agreed to forward the three draft calendars to the board for final action.
