Saint Charles discusses police staffing, interviews underway for night-shift opening

The chief said two candidates brought prior experience; one candidate required potential academy support because an injury prevented completion of final academy testing. The chief said the village may sponsor training depending on the candidate selected. The police department also plans to continue recruitment and aims to increase hours of coverage.
The chief reported that increased in-house coverage has led to more incident reports — not necessarily more crime — because officers are available to take calls they previously would have deferred to county or state responders. "We're not relying on the county or the state to do it, which sometimes they might take 20 to 20 minutes to an hour to get to," the chief said, describing how increased local coverage affects recorded activity.
During the meeting residents and some council members questioned the need for additional officers, citing the village's falling population and what they described as decreasing crime rates. One resident asked the chief to compare staffing with similar-sized communities to show whether current staffing is comparable.
Why it matters: Decisions about staffing affect public safety coverage, response times and the police budget in the adopted FY2025–26 budget. Council members asked staff to provide an “apple-to-apple” comparison with neighboring communities to justify staffing levels and costs.
The police department also reported routine maintenance on the new hybrid patrol vehicle under warranty and continued community outreach plans, including a planned FBI/IC3 fraud-education presentation for seniors at no cost to the village.
Ending Council asked the police chief to present comparative staffing data at a future meeting as the hiring process continues. The department will return to council with the results of interviews and recommendations.
