The Placerville City Council voted March 11 to ask El Dorado County for $115,245 in fiscal‑year 2025–26 funding to help offset maintenance and program costs for county residents who use the city’s aquatic center.
Parks staff and Community Services Director Ken Nishihara told the council the aquatic center serves primarily county residents: roughly 76 percent of participants last year lived outside Placerville city limits. Staff said about 4,400 individuals used the center last year and that approximately 3,390 were county residents.
Nishihara described the county’s current budget pressures and said county staff were reviewing discretionary contributions; he asked the council to be advocates for the service as the county finalizes budget decisions. The council passed the request on a unanimous roll call vote and directed staff to pursue the county funding request and to monitor county budget‑timeline hearings in April.
Public commenters, including regular users and volunteers, supported the request and emphasized the center’s role in teaching swim skills and lifeguard training. Staff said the city seeks the modest county contribution in recognition that much of the center’s usage comes from outside the city.
