At the Haywood County Schools Board of Education meeting public comment period, two members of the public addressed the board about funding priorities and concerns for vulnerable students.
Nathan Roberto asked the board to consider the relationship between funding and community peace, linking support for Medicaid, education and exceptional‑children services to stable communities. “Peace looks like funding Medicaid, funding education, funding EC teachers who serve our disabled students,” Roberto said, urging citizens and board members to contact state representatives.
Erin Araji described her personal ties to public education and voiced concerns raised to her by teachers, including immigrant students staying away from school out of fear and worries that voucher proposals could pull funding away from public schools. Araji said she moved to the area to raise her family and wants “strong funding, maintaining safe environments where children can have access to these services they need in order to thrive and perform well academically.”
The board did not take action on the issues raised during public comment; speakers’ remarks were entered into the public record for board members and the community to consider.
