Marietta touts No. 1 national digital city ranking; city shows tech projects including a new beam-activated Polk Street crosswalk

City staff said Marietta was named the nation’s number-one Digital City and presented a series of technology initiatives intended to improve city services and public safety during the agenda review session.
Presenters described tools in human resources, finance, development services, GIS and procurement: a mobile-friendly applicant tracking system with QR-code application options; online license and tax renewals with 24/7 accessibility; a procurement and contract-management system nearing final onboarding; plan-review systems (SAGES and Nautiline) for development services; and an interactive online parking map for Marietta Square showing nearly 3,400 parking spaces with wayfinding links to navigation apps.
Public-works staff described a new beam-activated lane-light crosswalk installed on Polk Street at Marietta Middle School. The system uses sensors on each side of the crossing that activate pole lights and in-road lane lights when the beam is broken by a pedestrian; a push-button will also be installed. Staff said the device is one of the first of its kind in the area and that the city and Marietta City Schools partnered on the installation. The crosswalk, staff said, should improve nighttime visibility and safety for students and others crossing under the bridge.
Staff said the digital and safety projects are part of the city’s effort to streamline services for residents, business owners and employees. The city will begin its annual street-resurfacing program the following day and listed upcoming public events and ribbon cuttings connected to operations and community outreach.
