Providence sustainability staff report benchmarking rollout, decarbonization roadmap and solar pilots

Providence sustainability officials briefed the City Energy & Resilience Committee on March 12 on a suite of programs meant to lower municipal utility costs and phase fossil fuels out of city-owned buildings.
The department highlighted a newly launched municipal building energy reporting program, a cloud-based utility-management system and a decarbonization roadmap the department expects to deliver later this year.
“We're excited to talk to you about the work that the Department of Sustainability has been doing, to really achieve cost savings for the city through energy efficiency, electrification, and decarbonization,” said Priscilla Dale Cruz, director of sustainability.
Why it matters: Sustainability staff framed the work as both cost-saving and resilience-building. The department told the committee it manages roughly a $12,000,000 utilities budget for municipal heat, power and water; uses a cloud database it calls an Energy Intelligence Suite to track accounts; and has identified near-term avoided costs — including roughly $35,000 a year in late-fee avoidance — through automated invoice and payment workflows.
