Lancaster-area sheriff's station reports overall decline in Part 1 crime, mixed changes by category

Deputy Kate Gruppie of the Lancaster Sheriff's Station presented January 2025 crime statistics to the Lancaster Criminal Justice Commission, reporting that Part 1 crimes in the station area fell 19.81% compared with the same period in 2024.
Gruppie said the station recorded four homicides (two in city limits, two in unincorporated areas) and noted that forcible sex offenses rose in reported counts: 12 incidents in the city and one in unincorporated areas, an increase the presenter described as 225% compared with the prior period. Arson incidents were reported at seven total (five in the city, two in unincorporated areas), a 75% increase.
Other category changes presented included decreases in burglary (52 in the city; total 60, down 21.05%) and in larceny-theft (75 in city; total 91, down 38.51%). Grand-theft-auto reports totaled 132 (114 city; 18 unincorporated), down 25.84% from the previous year. Robberies totaled 28 (25 city; 3 unincorporated), a 13.79% decrease for the city. Aggravated assaults rose slightly.
Deputy Gruppie also reviewed traffic data for January: two fatal collisions, 69 injury crashes, 53 non-injury collisions, 244 citations and 42 DUI arrests. A traffic-trained deputy assigned to DUI enforcement was singled out for driving the department's DUI enforcement work.
Commissioners asked whether fatal traffic collisions are counted alongside criminal homicides; Gruppie explained that fatal traffic-collision reports are compiled separately and that a later district attorney review can determine whether criminal charges are appropriate.
