Planning commissioners elect Robin Anderson chair, Candace Erickson vice chair

The Midvale Planning Commission on March 12 elected Robin Anderson as its new chair and retained Candace Erickson as vice chair after conducting nominations and paper-ballot voting under recently updated bylaws.
The commission said it is using a two-track procedure in which members and alternates may nominate candidates, the commission establishes a pool of nominees and then conducts secret paper ballots to reduce influence from early verbal votes. Staff explained the process and read the procedural rules before nominations began.
Under the rules explained by staff, a candidate needs four votes to win. Commissioners first nominated and voted for chair candidates Robin Anderson and Candace Erickson; paper ballots produced four votes for Anderson and three for Erickson, meeting the four-vote threshold and electing Anderson chair. The commission then opened nominations for vice chair; Shane Lidke and Candace Erickson were placed in the eligible pool and, after paper ballots, Erickson received four votes and Lidke received three, making Erickson vice chair.
Commissioners and staff emphasized this was the first time using the revised bylaw language for leadership selection and asked attendees to be patient as the process was tested. The commission chairmanship and vice chairmanship will formally shift at the next meeting.
The commission also approved the Feb. 26, 2025 meeting minutes earlier in the evening by voice vote.
Procedural notes: staff said alternates may nominate and vote and that the ballot threshold is four votes; if no candidate reaches four votes, the commission conducts additional rounds and eliminates the lowest vote-getter(s). The ballots were collected and read into the record by staff to produce the tallies.
Commissioners present for the elections included Chair Candace Erickson, Vice Chair Robin Anderson, Commissioner Snow, Commissioner Lidke, Commissioner Tibbets and Commissioner Edwards; Commissioner Tibbets left early at about 6:35 p.m.
