Sandpoint committee recommends broader sustainability definition and begins prioritizing comprehensive-plan matrix

Sandpoint Sustainability Committee Chair Wayne Benner called the special meeting to order March 12 and the committee approved a motion to recommend that the City Council consider edits to the sustainability definition in the city's comprehensive plan.

The committee moved to send the revised wording to the City Council for consideration. Committee member Ted Dickerson said, "I move that we recommend changes to the sustainability definition in the comprehensive plan, as amended by this committee." The motion passed after an oral vote.

Why it matters: The committee is advising changes to the 2024 comprehensive plan's definition of sustainability to explicitly reference social (community), economic and environmental development and to emphasize stewardship of resources as related to both the community and the built and natural environments. Those edits, if accepted by the City Council and placed on a council agenda by the mayor, would guide how departments and future projects interpret sustainability goals for Sandpoint.
