Patron concerns prompt library to explain Kanopy package model and digital resource strategy

Kathleen (library staff) described a conversation between the patron, identified in the meeting as Mr. Badgley, and John Reed, the library’s adult selector who the meeting noted has moved into the electronic resources librarian role. Kathleen said Mr. Badgley initially wanted an exact match between the physical DVD collection and Kanopy; John explained that the library subscribes to Kanopy packages (branded Kanopy Plus) — curated thematic bundles offered at fixed prices that provide unlimited streaming to patrons, rather than a la carte licensing of every individual title. After the explanation, Kathleen said, Mr. Badgley was satisfied.
Staff explained the library chose package subscriptions to avoid the budget volatility other libraries experienced when usage surged under pay-per-use models. Kathleen said Garland purchases themed bundles (about 300 titles per pack in several categories) that are refreshed by Kanopy staff over time and that the library has increased the number of packages in its second full year. Staff noted Kanopy Kids as a popular collection and that device compatibility includes desktops, mobile devices and smart TVs.
Kathleen also told the board that the library will now borrow DVDs and audiobooks from other libraries (interlibrary loan) where appropriate, and that if a desired title is available on Hoopla or as a physical disc, staff will pursue acquisition or interlibrary loan on behalf of patrons. John Reed’s new role — electronic resources librarian, formerly adult selector — was noted during the discussion.
Board members asked for follow-up reporting on electronic resources and how the library promotes those services beyond social media. The board added future agenda requests for an overview of online services and promotion strategies. Library statistics in the packet showed a 4% increase in checkouts for November, which staff highlighted during the meeting.
