Garland Public Library has selected Malas by Marcela Fuentes as its One Book, One Garland selection for year two and announced a summer kickoff and an author appearance in September, staff told the board.
Daphne Farris, identified in the meeting as a senior librarian for public service who specializes in adult services, said the title — a June 2024 Good Morning America Book Club pick — explores cultural perceptions of women who challenge traditional roles and features settings and cultural touchstones relevant to some Garland residents. Farris said kickoff activities are scheduled to begin June 13 and programming will run into September.
Staff are negotiating simultaneous-use ebook and e-audiobook access with OverDrive and the publisher so multiple patrons can read without wait lists during the program, Farris said. She described an adult programming showcase for the kickoff — an after-hours evening event intended to highlight adult programs across the system — and said each branch will stage displays and at least one related program. Several locations plan programs tied to themes in the book, including a proposed quinceañera display at the South branch.
Farris described the selection process as a hybrid committee of staff, patrons and a board member who nominated and vetted finalists; those finalists were read by the committee before narrowing to Malas. She provided biographical details about the author: Marcela Fuentes was born in Del Rio, lives in Fort Worth and teaches at Texas Christian University; the meeting noted Malas is Fuentes’s debut novel.
