U.N. says talks and UNIFIL activity support blue-line cessation-of-hostilities efforts

The U.N. special coordinator for Lebanon, Janine Henness Plaszak, held meetings this week with Lebanese and Israeli officials to support cessation-of-hostilities arrangements along the Blue Line, U.N. spokesperson Steph said Monday.
Steph said Henness Plaszak met Lebanon’s president, the speaker of parliament, the prime minister and the defense minister, and also met Israeli foreign and defense ministers during an earlier visit to Israel. The meetings focused on implementation of Security Council resolution 1701 and on steps to maintain the cessation of hostilities.
The spokesperson said UNIFIL hosted the sixth meeting of the cessation-of-hostilities implementation mechanism at a position along the Blue Line and, in coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces, the Israeli Defense Forces and the Red Cross, facilitated the transfer of four Lebanese nationals from Israeli detention into Lebanon. U.N. liaison officers accompanied the Red Cross team in the movement, Steph said.
Steph added that U.N. peacekeepers continue to support the Lebanese Armed Forces with patrolling and engineering activities and welcomed recent announcements that Lebanon and Israel will begin talks to diplomatically resolve outstanding issues between the two countries.
Security Council resolution 1701 was cited at the briefing as the framework for addressing outstanding provisions related to the Blue Line.
