U.N. secretary-general launches internal review called ‘UN 80’

Steph said the secretary-general appointed a dedicated internal task force led by the undersecretary-general for policy, Guy Ryder, and composed of principals representing the entire U.N. system. The task force will present proposals to member states in three areas: rapidly identifying efficiencies and improvements in U.N. operations, thoroughly reviewing implementation of mandates from member states, and conducting a strategic review of deeper structural changes and program realignment.
“...he’s officially launching what he calls the UN 80 initiative,” Steph said, summarizing the secretary-general’s announcement. She said the review builds on reforms begun during the secretary-general’s first term and is intended to ensure the U.N. delivers better for people who depend on its services and for the taxpayers who fund it.
The spokesperson framed the initiative as a process to identify both operational efficiencies and longer-term structural options rather than an immediate package of specific cuts or reorganizations. She said the effort is tied to a “clear-eyed view of the global situation,” including pressures on funding for U.N. activities.
The announcement comes during the U.N.’s eightieth anniversary year. Steph said the task force will consult across the U.N. system and present proposals to member states, but she did not provide a timeline for formal decisions by member states.
The briefing also noted related events at U.N. headquarters this week, including development cooperation meetings intended to inform wider discussions on financing and reform.
