House Bill 2,185 would expand the National Guard Educational Assistance Act to include dependents of National Guard members and would broaden a separate program to include graduate degree programs beyond a master’s degree. Senator Thomas moved the bill and Senator Rose seconded; the committee passed it on a voice vote.
House Bill 2,033 would add to a list of at‑risk education programs those provided by nonprofit organizations accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council. That bill was moved by Senator Thomas and seconded by Senator Rose and was passed by the committee. During discussion, Senators Starnes and Arkebrite said they believe the Kansas State Board of Education and Kansas State Department of Education should oversee vetting and evidentiary review of programs, a point noted in the committee record.
