Southbridge Middle School teacher honored with Milken Educator Award

The Southbridge School Committee recognized a Southbridge Middle School science teacher, identified in the meeting only as Jill, as a recipient of the national Milken Educator Award during its March 11 meeting.
Dr. Villar described the Milken Educator Award as "among the most prestigious award offered to teachers across The United States" and said it is rare for a teacher in any district to receive it. He said Southbridge had the only teacher in the Commonwealth to receive the award this year and called that a "point of great pride."
The district's middle-school principal told the committee the award recipient brings "authentic engagement and an authentic excitement" to the classroom, that she started with the district in February 2018, and that she supports new teachers as an instructional coach. The principal also noted the teacher coaches multiple sports and has leadership roles beyond the classroom.
Jill addressed the committee and thanked attendees: "It's been wild. I've been surprised every step of the way, but it's an honor to be here, an honor to be recognized, and I really I really appreciate everybody taking their time to be here tonight and all the work that everyone in the district of Southbridge does every day."
Committee members and the superintendent praised the teacher's influence on students and staff and encouraged the community to recognize the district's instructional improvements.
