The Gunnison Valley Library Board on a February 2025 meeting introduced a new bilingual library employee and reviewed board term lengths while opening the search for a new secretary. Members also voted to approve minutes from the November meeting and adjourned.
Carolyn Chiles, director of the Gunnison Valley Library, said the library has hired Aura Gonzalez to replace staffer Caitlin Leatherwood, who “has gone on her mission.” Chiles said she met Gonzalez and completed hiring paperwork, and described Gonzalez as having a “great personality, great work work ethic,” adding, “she's bilingual, so I think that will really add to our library.” Board members also noted Gonzalez lives locally; one member said she “lives, like, 2 blocks away.”
The hire was announced during routine business after the board approved its prior meeting minutes. A motion to accept the November minutes was made and seconded; members responded “aye,” and the minutes were accepted.
Board members spent substantial time updating and confirming term expirations for members. According to the discussion, the state sets library board terms at three years and allows no more than two consecutive terms, but the Gunnison Valley Library Board has been using an internal allowance to offer two-year terms in some cases. Members confirmed individual preferences for two- or three-year terms and asked a small number of members to verify their start dates so staff can update records.
The board also discussed succession for the secretary role. One member, Christie (last name not specified in the transcript), indicated she would extend another year but the board said it would seek a new secretary; members discussed the time commitment for the role and noted that written minutes can be transcribed from the meeting recording if a volunteer takes notes by hand.
Other operational notes raised by staff included weekday schedule changes and library usage: staff said Fridays had been problematic because of competing events but that Saturday attendance has increased, with one staffer reporting 26 visitors on a recent Saturday versus the prior typical 4–5. Members also discussed continued use of a downstairs room the library has “appropriated” for programs; a city council member on the board said she would check with city staff about planned work in that area.
With no additional policies to vote on, a final motion to adjourn was made and seconded; members voted “aye” and the meeting was adjourned.
