Ferron fire officials told the City Council they will hold a recruitment open house and staffing push as they seek to bolster volunteer ranks ahead of the winter and wildland seasons.
A fire department representative said the open house will include a recruitment table; the event is scheduled with outreach materials and community flyers. "My goal is 15 firefighters," the representative said. "We're at 9 auxiliary. We're at 7 right now." The transcript does not specify whether those counts distinguish between volunteer firefighters and auxiliary personnel.
Officials described regional training opportunities for local personnel. The representative said a multi-site fire school recently held in St. George will return next year with several props, including a search-and-rescue prop and ventilation and live-fire training scenarios. Wildland training is scheduled to begin Oct. 18 in Price, and the department plans pack testing and other readiness checks before the May seasonal peak.
The department also discussed equipment and storage needs. A representative said they had sought shipping containers for station storage but had received few responses and some quotes they described as "outrageous." The council did not authorize specific purchases during the discussion.
Council members and staff agreed to continue outreach; flyers will be circulated and posted in public locations, and the department will staff a recruitment table at the open house. No formal vote or expenditure was recorded in the meeting minutes for recruitment efforts.
