Planning commissioners plan training push, suggest regional sessions and online modules

Members of the Grand County Planning Commission on March 10, 2024, discussed meeting statutory training recommendations and practical options for completing required training modules.
Jerry raised training requirements that were linked to state statute and to resources offered by the ombudsman’s office, and commissioners reviewed free online offerings such as CivicLink and other available training. "It looks like both of those are free and a lot of these topics are covered," a commissioner said when summarizing the online resources the ombudsman recommended.
The commission discussed holding an in-person session in Grand County that could be opened to neighboring jurisdictions to make a state presenter’s trip more efficient. Commissioners also proposed a distributed approach in which individual members volunteer to study different training topics and later brief the group; Jerry volunteered to build a matrix of training topics for members to claim and to track progress.
Staff noted an annual open-meetings training (the public meetings act) is being planned with the county attorney and likely will be scheduled in April for county boards. Commissioners agreed to circulate links to suggested online modules and to aim for a mix of group sessions and individual self-study so the commission can cover more topics over the coming year.
No formal motion or vote occurred; the commission agreed on next steps for coordination and follow-up.
