Council establishes preferential parking district on one block of Liberty Boulevard

The South Gate City Council on March 11 approved a resident petition to establish a preferential parking district on a one-block portion of Liberty Boulevard, the city said during the meeting.
Assistant City Manager and Public Works Director Art Cervantes told the council staff verified the petition and that the residents met the municipal code’s criteria, including a two-thirds resident signature threshold. The district covers Liberty Boulevard from Garden View Avenue to Southgate Avenue and would prohibit non-permitted parking between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.
“Those are selected by the residents based on what they believe is going to address the issues the parking issues in their neighborhoods,” Cervantes said, describing how different neighborhoods choose different hour windows for their needs. City staff published required notices and mailed property owners within 500 feet of the proposed district.
The council approved the item after no members of the public spoke during the hearing. Staff said the signs for the district would be installed within 90 days if the council’s action is implemented.
