Council approves Mission College partnership for July 4 celebration; staff to continue planning for 2026 options

The City of Santa Clara approved a partnership with Mission College and California’s Great America to host the city’s July 4 All‑City picnic and fireworks show in 2025, citing campus infrastructure and traffic management as reasons to move the event off Central Park for the second consecutive year.
Parks and Recreation Director Damon Sparacino said Mission College’s campus “appeared to have sufficient infrastructure, including available parking to collaborate and support the event” and that Great America has an existing fireworks program the city can enhance. He recommended the city pursue the college/Great America partnership and staff estimated an additional enhanced fireworks show at Great America would cost about $20,000; staff said the expense can be covered within existing event funding and sponsorships.
Spreading resources across sites at Mission College reduced the volume of city public‑safety deployments needed compared with a large, nighttime show in Central Park, Sparacino said. “The fourth of July fireworks event at Central Park is not advised as it requires significant public safety resources,” he told council. The city’s public safety leaders previously told staff that Central Park’s layout and neighborhood impacts — including constrained access and east‑west traffic backups — pose risks for a large nighttime fireworks event.
Council members and staff acknowledged Mission College presented crowd‑management and egress lessons — including limited parking overflow and post‑event traffic queuing — and staff said they would target improved ingress and egress planning, staged departures and additional traffic control to address last year’s challenges.
Several council members said they want to return the event to Central Park for the calendar year 2026 commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Council asked staff to analyze costs and staffing required to make a Central Park fireworks show feasible and to report back. Council approved the Mission College/Great America partnership for 2025 by voice vote; the decision was recorded as unanimous of members present.
