The Newton City Commission approved a temporary alcohol permit to allow controlled wine samples at participating downtown businesses during a March 20 Wine Walk sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the Choose Newton/Main Street promotion group.
Denise told the commission the chamber would apply for the city permit on behalf of all participating businesses to avoid each business making a separate application. “They will go to the different locations. You cannot get in unless you have a ticket. You cannot have alcohol unless you have a ticket,” Denise said, adding that tickets had sold out at the time of the meeting.
Staff and the state have discussed procedures for managing the event, Denise said. Participating venues must track pours for the state’s alcohol tax reporting and the chamber will purchase the alcohol and remit taxes. Door volunteers will check tickets at exits and entries and ensure attendees do not leave a venue with alcohol in hand; attendees must have empty glasses or pour out remaining samples before moving along the route.
A commissioner moved and seconded approval. The motion carried by voice vote.
