The Newton City Commission approved two event requests for Centennial Park during its regular meeting. Staff recommended approval after checking with schools and recreation staff and finding no scheduling conflicts.
Denise, a city staff member handling permits, described the first request as a closure of the southern parking lot and the main drive at Centennial Park for the Battle of the Schools event. “We would recommend approval,” Denise said. Commissioners moved and seconded the motion, and the motion carried without further discussion.
A second request sought use of the far parking lot at Centennial Park for the annual Touch-a-Truck event on May 16. Denise said staff and school officials had been notified and there were no conflicts; she recommended approval. A commissioner moved to approve the Touch-a-Truck parking request and the motion carried following the customary voice vote.
Both approvals were procedural and did not require extended conditions beyond standard park and permit requirements.
